Below you will find a guide consisting of 5 tips for how you can best maintain and look after your cutting board.
- Cleaning the cutting board
- Air drying and storage of cutting board
- Bad odor can be removed with 2 ingredients
- Oil treatment of cutting board
- Separation of raw materials
1. Cleaning your cutting board
When you have used your cutting board, wash it immediately after use with warm water and a mild dish soap. Avoid leaving your cutting board in water for a long time, as it can help to affect the wooden material of your cutting board.
Therefore, putting your wooden cutting board in the dishwasher is also a huge disadvantage , even though it can be tempting. A wooden cutting board does not benefit from constant heat and intense humidity, and by putting your cutting board in the dishwasher, your cutting board can develop cracks and mold.
2. Air drying and storage of cutting board
After you have washed your cutting board, you should make sure to dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth, and let it air dry in a place where it can be allowed to dry properly, e.g. up a wall. If you put your cutting board in a cupboard or drawer, you prevent your cutting board from drying properly, which can lead to mold growth on your cutting board.
3. Remove bad odors from your cutting board with 2 ingredients
Frequent use of your cutting board can cause an odor over time, which you can get rid of by using 2 ingredients. All you need is a tablespoon of flake salt and one lemon. Lemon is known to be a natural bleaching agent and by using salt, which has an antibacterial effect, it can help to remove the smell and stains from your cutting board. You simply cut a lemon and pour flake salt over your cutting board.
Next, you rub your lemon around on the cutting board while there is salt on it. Finally, wash the cutting board with warm water and a mild dish soap.
Tip: As an alternative to the salt, you can also use a tablespoon of baking soda.
4. Extend the beauty of your cutting board with oil treatment
In order to preserve the quality of your cutting board, we recommend that you occasionally use an oil to treat your cutting board, to create a protective surface and preserve the quality of the wood.
With oil lubrication, we recommend that you use one of the following oils - Grape, seed, rasp or sunflower oil. Apply one of the oils to a dry cutting board and let it sit for a while before washing it with water and a mild dish soap.
Note: If you have considered using olive oil and have an oak cutting board, your cutting board may end up with a very dark surface, darker than desired.
5. Separate the use of your cutting board for different raw materials
As a final tip to keep your cutting board neat and not least clean in the best possible way, you can advantageously separate your cutting boards for different foods. Almost everyone knows the rule that raw meat and vegetables do not belong together. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a separate cutting board for meat and another for vegetables, so that you avoid unnecessary bacteria from each other and thus achieve the best hygiene when you use your cutting boards for cooking.
